ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (AP) — National Railroad Museum officials may be loaning a World War II-era locomotive to a British museum.
The National Railway Museum in York, England has agreed to pay transportation costs for the locomotive named for President Dwight Eisenhower. Officials there also want to invest thousands of dollars to refurbishing it.
The museum wants to use Green Bay's locomotive for an exhibit commemorating the 75th anniversary of a British steam engine's world-record speed of 126 mph. Of the engine class that achieved that feat in 1938, four are in England, one is in Canada and one is in Green Bay.
If exchange details can be worked out, the engine could be gone by summer from the Ashwaubenon museum. The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports it would return in two years.
