UPDATE: Woman Sues after Milwaukee Cop's Sexual Assault

UPDATED Friday, March 22, 2013 --- 10:04 a.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A woman who says she was sexually assaulted by a Milwaukee police officer when he responded to her 911 call three years ago is suing the officer, the police department, the police chief and the city.

A Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report says the civil lawsuit accuses Officer Ladmarald Cates of violating the woman's civil rights and leaving her with emotional distress. The suit also alleges that police officials and the city violated her civil rights by failing to properly discipline Cates for previous violations.

Cates been fired from the police department. He's serving a 24-year prison term.

Police spokesman Mark Stanmeyer says he can't comment. A message left for Milwaukee City Attorney Grant Langley on Friday wasn't immediately returned.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A fired Milwaukee police officer has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman after he responded to her 911 call two years ago.

U.S. District Judge J.P. Stadtmueller on Monday said the actions of former officer Ladmarald Cates showed evidence of "a very depraved mind."

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/Q5PrX4 ) reports Cates' sentence was shorter than the 30 years recommended by the prosecution.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mel Johnson says a lengthy sentence was necessary both to punish Cates and to deter other members of the police department from breaking the law.

In January, Cates was convicted of violating the woman's civil rights by engaging in aggravated sexual abuse while acting under color of law. He testified that the sex was consensual.
