MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Transportation has rejected Milwaukee's request for additional federal money to expand a proposed downtown streetcar system.
The city applied for up to $26.6 million in federal transit grant money.
This week, the federal agency announced awards nationwide totaling $474 million. Milwaukee did not get any money.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1dNSros ) says the city had hoped to use the federal money to expand its proposed $64.6 million downtown streetcar system. The city hopes to start construction on the system next year and have streetcars running in 2016.
