Fond du Lac County Convent to Close After 160 yrs

Posted: Saturday, May 5, 2012 --- 8:16p.m.

MOUNT CALVARY, Wis. (AP) -- A Fond du Lac County convent that opened its doors 160 years ago will be shutting down this summer.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Convent in Mount Calvary has fallen victim to aging facilities and decreasing occupancy.

The convent was founded in 1852 and housed countless nuns, but only 20 sisters remain now.

A report in The Reporter of Fond du Lac (http://fondul.ac/IWz6Un ) says the facility will shut down with a final ritual in June. The building and its 38 acres will be auctioned in July.

Sister Maxine Bauer says the convent started with log cabins and evolved to include beautiful gardens. She says she and her fellow nuns will always carry fond memories of the place, but they also understand it's time to let it go.
