UPDATE: Police identify suspect who killed restaurant cook

UPDATED Friday, December 20, 2013 --- 12:40 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Police say they've identified a man they believe shot and killed a cook at a restaurant on Milwaukee's east side, but that he's still at large.

Chief Edward Flynn says the 21-year-old George Webb employee tried to intervene when some customers became unruly in the restaurant early Friday after the bars closed. Flynn says the group of people left and the suspect returned and fatally shot the employee in the chest. He died at the scene.

Flynn says the suspect has a lengthy criminal record. The chief says additional officers will patrol the commercial neighborhood around the restaurant, which isn't far from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

At a news conference in the neighborhood, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says he wants to know how the suspect with a long criminal history obtained a gun.
