UPDATE: Gov. Walker compares graduation to zip line jump

UPDATED: Friday, May 16, 2014 --- 8:09 p.m.

MEQUON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker tells graduating students at Concordia University that when they face uncertainty in the future, they should take their first step with confidence.

Walker addressed nearly 500 graduate students Friday at the school in Mequon, north of Milwaukee.

Walker doesn't have a college degree himself, but says his message was inspired by what happened to him a few weeks earlier.

As part of a tourism event in Green Bay he took the inaugural ride down a 1,000-foot zip line. He says when he stood on the tower and looked down he momentarily questioned his decision. But he focused on the horizon and jumped and felt exhilarated.

He tells the graduate students they too might question themselves, but they should trust their education, focus on the horizon and go.

MEQUON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker will be giving his first commencement address when he addresses graduate students at Concordia University in Mequon.

Walker will address nearly 500 graduate students Friday, at the school north of Milwaukee. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m.

Walker's office says the governor had been invited to give other commencement speeches but this is the first one that worked out.

Walker went to Marquette University, although he left in 1990 when he was 34 credits shy of graduating. He has said he planned to go back and finish but his options were limited after he got married in 1993 and had a son in 1994.

He recently said he'd like to complete his degree through the University of Wisconsin System's new flexible-option degree program.
