VIDEO: Grant Co. Sheriff Department to Give Gun Safety Kits

UPDATED Thursday, January 24. 2013 --- 5:35p.m.

GRANT COUNTY--In Grant County, guns are a staple of life: "Every household probably in Grant County, probably has some type of gun, mainly for hunting," said the county's sheriff, Nate Dreckman.

But sometimes, accidents turn deadly. "We had a tragic incident here in Grant County last summer," said Sheriff Dreckman. "A young boy lost his life because of an unsecured firearm, so we want to prevent those from happening."

That's part of the reason they're pushing gun locks."The child might be here today.....something as simple as this could have prevented that death," he said.

The department is teaming up with Project ChildSafe to provide 500 free firearm safety kits--including locks--to residents. No matter what style of gun you have, a gun lock can help you keep it safe.

The owner of Bullseye sports in Platteville said the prevalence of locks seems to have ticked up over the last decade. Nowadays, many models come with them. "I got a whole box full of them here," said Terry Lyght, the owner. "And I just hand them out, give them free," he said. "All the distributors and all the manufacturers of firearms send a gun lock with every gun."

The benefit is that they can help you keep unwanted users from firing your gun."It's usually not your kids that's a problem, it's their friends that come over,"said Lyght. "If they're not used to a gun they might want to see it or touch it, so it's a good idea to keep them locked up."

LANCASTER, Wis. (AP) -- The Grant County Sheriff's Department is giving out 500 free firearm safety kits.

They are working with the nationwide firearms safety education program called Project ChildSafe.

Sheriff Nate Dreckman says the goal is to prevent a child or unauthorized person from accessing a gun.

The safety kits include a gun lock and are being distributed at the department in Lancaster.

The program, developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, has distributed more than 35 million firearm safety kits throughout the country since 2003.
