UPDATE: Closing arguments set in teen's homicide trial

UPDATED Thursday, June 20, 2013 --- 7:30 a.m.

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) -- Closing arguments are expected in Sheboygan County Circuit Court where a 14-year-old boy is on trial in the bludgeoning death of an elderly woman.

Testimony in Nathan Paape's trial ended Wednesday when Paape and his accused accomplice, Antonio Barbeau, each took the witness stand and gave widely varying accounts of how Barbeau's 78-year-old great-grandmother was killed.

Sheboygan Press Media reports Paape claimed he only struck Barbara Olson twice with a hammer out of fear Barbeau would turn on him. Paape said the robbery and murder were plotted and proposed by Barbeau just hours before they went to Olson's house. He testified he thought Barbeau was joking about killing his great-grandmother.

Barbeau has already been convicted of first-degree intentional homicide and is awaiting sentencing.

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) -- A judge has ruled the trial of a Sheboygan teenager accused in the killing of a 78-year-old woman will remain in adult court.

Judge Timothy Van Akkeren ruled Wednesday after a hearing on whether to move the 14-year-old boy's case to juvenile court.

The Sheboygan Press (http://shebpr.es/Wgotk5 ) reports the judge found the boy would have access to the same mental health programs, whether he's in the adult or juvenile correctional system.

The boy has not entered a plea yet. He and a 14-year-old friend are accused of bludgeoning the friend's great-grandmother, Barbara Olson, to death at her Sheboygan Falls home Sept. 17. The boys were 13 at the time.

The friend has allowed his case to remain in adult court and has pleaded not guilty by mental disease or defect.
