MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Hunters and trappers who want to take part in Wisconsin's wolf hunt this fall can soon apply for the necessary permits.

Applications must be submitted between Aug. 1 and Aug. 31. Permits will be awarded by drawing, and successful applicants will be notified by mail. The application fee is $10.

If you apply but you don't get a permit, you'll receive a 'preference point' that improves your chances of being selected in future drawings.

The Natural Resources Board established six wolf-harvest zones. Each zone will have a wolf quota, although the quotas are still being finalized.

The state Department of Natural Resources set the overall harvest limit at 201 wolves. The DNR estimates as many as 880 may roam the state.

The season runs from Oct. 15 through Feb. 28.
