UPDATE: Janesville School Board Approves Teacher Dress Code

UPDATED: Wednesday, December 12, 2012 --- 9:25 a.m.

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- Some schools have dress codes for students, but starting next year public schools in Janesville will start enforcing dress codes for teachers.

The new rules approved Tuesday say teachers won't be able to wear jeans, shorts, flip-flops or jogging suits. Nor can they wear clothes that are provocative, ragged or that allow undergarments to be visible.

The Janesville School Board approved the new dress code by a 5-2 vote. It will go into effect July 1.

The policy calls for business or business-casual dress, which could include collared shirts, sweaters and casual slacks. Women may wear skirts, dresses, blouses and dress sandals.

Exceptions are allowed on school spirit days, casual Fridays and extremely hot days.

Employees such as physical-education teachers and maintenance workers are exempt.

The Janesville School Board approved a new dress code for teachers banning blue jeans among other items Tuesday night.

The current code only calls for teachers to "dress appropriately." The new multi-page policy prohibits flip-flops, blue jeans, shorts, and sweat suits with exceptions for some specialties like gym teachers.

It's a response some in the community were hoping for.

"Women are wearing skirts way above the knees, wearing real tight blouses, real tight jeans," said Jon Flora, a school district volunteer.

Others criticized teachers being possibly sent home to change for violating the code, saying students would notice. Another board member questioned why a teachers would need a dress code if many large companies do not have them.

The new code was approved on a 5-2 vote and will go into effect if courts uphold Act 10, which calls for schools to create employee handbooks.

Thanks to Act 10, the teacher's union has been cut off at the knees...it's time they're treated that way. If they spent their time doing what they're paid to do and showed some appreciation occassionally, rather than whining, the students and taxpayers couldn't help but benefit.

This is a good thing. Teachers should be examples to the students and should be careful not to dress in a sexually enticing way. If teachers would dress professionally, students would know how to dress for a job.

From what I have seen over the years from some school boards members, someone should make a code for them when they are out partying. I would like to know where they get to be experts on what clothes to wear. and if they start telling teachers what to wear, they had better start buying the clothes for them.
