SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) -- Lake Superior State University's Board of Trustees has selected Thomas Pleger as the northern Michigan school's next president.

The roughly 3,000-student university announced Tuesday that it is expected to formalize the University of Wisconsin official's appointment at the board's regular meeting on Friday.

Pleger will be the Sault Ste. Marie school's eighth president. He's replacing current school President Tony McLain, who announced in 2012 that he would be retiring.

Pleger is campus executive officer and dean of the University of Wisconsin-Baraboo/Sauk County, and was one of three finalists. He currently is responsible for the liberal arts/professional studies campus operations, including academics, budget and fundraising.

Prior to taking the position at UW-Baraboo/Sauk County, he was associate campus dean at UW-Fox Valley.
