UPDATE: Wis. shelter gets generous support for saved dogs

UPDATED Tuesday, December 24, 2013 --- 10:30 a.m.

MERRILL, Wis. (AP) -- The Lincoln County Humane Society says it's received an "incredible" show of community support after about 50 dogs were rescued from a cold, filthy home over the weekend.

A Daily Herald Media report says the Humane Society has been inundated with donations -- everything from canned dog food to towels.

Staffers say they still need cleaning supplies and milk replacer to feed puppies that haven't been weaned yet. They say they could also use cash donations, since spaying and neutering costs might be as much as $10,000.

Shelter manager Liz Friedenfels says the dogs should be available for adoption soon.

Lincoln County Sheriff's Lt. Tim Fischer says no criminal charges are being pursued against the dogs' owners. He says there's not a criminal case to be made.

MERRILL, Wis. (AP) -- A north central Wisconsin humane society has rescued 50 dogs from a puppy mill that didn't have any heat.

According to Daily Herald Media, a couple originally contacted the Lincoln County Humane Society on Saturday to take about 20 dogs. But when shelter officials arrived they found more than 50 animals, mostly puppies, that needed to be removed.

The humane society's board president Patrick Hoerstmann says the home was condemned and wasn't suitable for dogs or people. Officials say they were also hoarders.

The chihuahuas, Australian shepherds and small "teddy bear" mixed breeds are being housed at the shelter.

Officials need to clear some legal hurdles to take possession of the animals, but it will be taking the names of people who want to adopt the dogs.
