Man Who Survived Fatal Fire in 1996 Dies

POSTED: Thursday, December 27, 2012 --- 12:00 p.m.

SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) -- A man who survived an Iron County house fire that killed his wife and five children in 1996 has died. Kirk Foley was 57.

His sister, Delores Moyer, tells the State Journal Foley died Dec. 14 of a chronic stomach ulcer condition that unexpectedly became acute.

She says the ulcers began after the fire, though no one can say for sure whether the two were connected.

A Friday funeral is planned at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dodgeville, where services for his family were held 16 years ago.

Fire officials said the February 1996 fire likely started in a wood furnace. Foley was blown through a window as he tried to save family members.

He rebuilt a house on the site and later remarried and fathered an 11-year-old daughter.
