Milwaukee Prep School Settles Over Pregnancy Suit

Posted: Thursday, March 14, 2013 --- 10: 54 pm

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Milwaukee area private prep school will pay $37,500 to settle a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced the settlement Thursday with the University School of Milwaukee.

The EEOC's lawsuit alleged the pre-kindergarten-through-grade-12 school terminated Mallory Barker because of her pregnancy. Barker was a part-time arts and crafts coordinator in the school's after-school program.

Under a consent decree settling the lawsuit, the University School will pay Barker $37,500. The settlement also prohibits future discrimination.

In a statement, the University School says it does not admit liability but believes settling the lawsuit is in the school's best interest. The school says it is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate.

The EEOC says the school also will train its employees, managers and supervisors about pregnancy discrimination.
