UPDATE: No One Wins GOP Endorsement for Senate Race

UPDATED: Saturday, May 12, 2012 --- 7:30p.m.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- None of the four Republican candidates for U.S. Senate have captured the 60 percent support needed to win the Republican Party of Wisconsin endorsement.

Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald came closest, getting 51 percent in the final round of voting. Former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann came in second with 49 percent.

Hedge fund manager Eric Hovde was the first candidate eliminated after he got just 16 percent of the vote in the first round. Former Gov. Tommy Thompson dropped out in the second round when he came in third with 18 percent.

The endorsement would have provided the winner with money and other support from the party.

Hovde and Thompson's campaigns downplayed their early exits, saying the vote isn't indicative of who will win in the Aug. 14 primary.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Former Gov. Tommy Thompson will not be getting the endorsement of the Wisconsin Republican Party.

He was eliminated in the second round of voting Saturday.

Former congressman Mark Neumann and state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald are battling it out. One of them must get 60 percent of the vote in the final round or no endorsement is issued.

Political newcomer Eric Hovde dropped out after the first round after he got the fewest number of votes. Thompson dropped out in the second round after getting about 18 percent of the vote.

Nuemann had about 47 percent after the second round and Fitzgerald had 35 percent.

Winning the endorsement can give a candidate a major boost by gaining access to the party's network of grass roots contacts, money and other assistance.
