UPDATE: Attorneys want stay of secret Wis. investigation

UPDATED Tuesday, November 19, 2013 --- 2:43 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Two attorneys have filed motions seeking to stay a secret investigation that's going on in five counties.

Online court records don't say what the investigation involves. But the filings name Eau Clare County reserve Judge Gregory Peterson and Francis Schmitz as respondents.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Tuesday that Peterson is overseeing an investigation that is reportedly focused on Gov. Scott Walker's campaign and conservative groups. Schmitz is working on that probe as a special prosecutor.

Attorneys Dean Strang and Matthew O'Neill filed motions with the state appeals court on behalf of three unnamed petitioners seeking to stay a so-called John Doe probe in Milwaukee, Iowa, Dodge, Dane and Columbia counties. The attorneys also have filed a motion to seal their requests.

Neither attorney immediately returned messages.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- As Gov. Scott Walker this week promotes the release of his book "Unintimidated," new details are emerging about a criminal investigation reported to be focusing on his campaign and conservative groups.

Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate said Monday reports about the investigation are one of the main reasons Walker needs to be defeated next year.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday in an editorial that Walker's campaign and more than two dozen conservative groups have been subpoenaed by a special prosecutor. Wisconsin Club for Growth director Eric O'Keefe told the paper he received a subpoena in early October and that at least three targets had their homes raided.

O'Keefe hasn't returned calls and emails from The Associated Press. The special prosecutor, Francis Schmitz, didn't immediately respond to messages Monday.
