Authorities say a missing person case in the Milwaukee suburb West Allis led to a shooting in Adams County that left a sheriff's deputy wounded and suspect dead.
Karen Costigan was babysitting for family Tuesday in West Allis when she disappeared. Unable to locate her, family asked police to check her home in Big Flats, north of Adams-Friendship in Adams County.
At the home deputies found Karen and her 55-year-old husband Thomas Costigan, who shot at officers several times, striking one, before turning the gun on himself. Costigan and a deputy were airlifted to a hospital in Marshfield for treatment. Costigan died after 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Police in West Allis say a series of domestic incidents led to a no-contact order. Court records indicate the couple applied for divorce in 2011 but later abandoned the proceedings.
The Adams County Sheriff's Department says the deputy shot was 43-year-old Todd Johnson. He remains in the hospital and has been with the department for five years.
