OXON HILL, Md. (AP) -- A 14-year-old Menomonee Falls student is Wisconsin's lone entrant in the 85th National Spelling Bee.

Heloise Cheruvalath is among 278 participants who won local and regional spelling bees to make it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The contest got under way Wednesday at a convention center outside Washington D.C.

Each gets the opportunity to spell two words during Wednesday's preliminary rounds. Their scores will be combined with scores from a 50-word computer test to determine the field of no more than 50 semifinalists.

Heloise is in the eighth grade at North Middle School.
