MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Milwaukee County Zoo is the new home for an orphaned sea lion pup.
The pup is named Nalu and at 3 months old was found abandoned on the Pacific coast in Santa Barbara, Calif. in early September.
Staff at the Santa Barbara Marine Mammal Stranding Center determined he was malnourished and dehydrated. They think he was somehow separated from his mother.
Zoo officials say he couldn't be released because he was still of nursing age. Sea lion pups don't begin eating meat until six to 12 months of age.
He arrived at the zoo on Nov. 7 and will be shown in public this spring.
According to the zoo, there will be an estimated 1,000 sea lion pups stranded on beaches this year alone.
