MAXVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities in west-central Wisconsin say a small plane has crashed during takeoff, killing the lone occupant.

The Buffalo County sheriff's office says a witness called 911 just before noon Sunday to report a crash at the Durand Municipal Airport. Authorities say the single-seat ultralight airplane crashed while taking off.

The pilot was killed on impact. He has been identified only as a man from the Durand area.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and will assist in the investigation.
