State Superintendent: Show Teachers Respect

POSTED: Thursday, September 20, 2012 --- 1:00 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin state superintendent Tony Evers says teachers have been unfairly targeted in budget and policy debates over the past year and more work needs to be done to restore dignity and respect to them.

Evers made the plea in his annual speech Thursday on the state of education in Wisconsin delivered in the state Capitol.

Evers says reasonable people can disagree over Gov. Scott Walker's proposal that effectively ended collective bargaining for teachers and public workers and forced them to pay more for health insurance and pension benefits.

But Evers says every citizen should be alarmed when teachers don't feel valued and respected in their communities.

Evers opposed Walker's collective bargaining changes but has worked closely with him on a number of other education reforms.

Wrong! It is the TAXPAYER is supposed to feel valued and respected!!! WE ARE THE CUSTOMER!!! Taxpayers should be alarmed when teachers demand that more of our hard-earned dollars go into their pockets, especially when the results don't warrant the compensation sought. The teachers have damaged their own reputation by conducting sick-outs, promoting liberal, political viewpoints on students, etc. I'd say that teachers need to exceed our expectations before they feel any love from most taxpayers. In the meantime, Evers can provide tissue (out of his own money) for the down-trodden teachers. Give me a break!
