2013 brought resolution to several old Wis. crimes

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The conviction of a 77-year-old Sheboygan woman for a 50-year-old crime, and a massive wildfire in Douglas County last May, were among Wisconsin's top non-political stories for 2013.

A number of crime stories made headlines. A 25-year-old West Allis woman was sentenced to 18 years after her three children died in a house fire while they were locked in a bedroom. Jaren Kuester of Waukesha was confined to a mental institution after killing three people at a home near Wiota.

In July, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee released 6,000 pages of documents that included personnel files for 42 priests with substantiated allegations of child sexual abuse. In September, a pier under the Leo Frigo Bridge in Green Bay sank by more than 2 feet, causing a long dip in the pavement.

Man dies in Wis. after truck breaks through ice

TOWN OF CRYSTAL, Wis. (AP) -- An Illinois man is believed to have died of exposure after crawling out of a truck that broke through an icy lake in northwestern Wisconsin.

The Washburn County Sheriff's Office identifies the man as 30-year-old Edward Steinhardt of Naperville, Illinois. The Duluth News-Tribune reports that deputies had been searching for him since December 23rd, when a business owner in St. Louis, Missouri reported a missing employee in a vehicle with a last GPS location in Washburn County.

On Friday, deputies searched the Dilly Lake area in the Town of Crystal. They found the truck partially submerged at the south end of the lake, and Steinhardt's body about a half-mile south along a creek.

Authorities believe Steinhardt likely escaped from his vehicle but then succumbed to the cold.

Missing Racine group home resident found dead

RACINE, Wis. (AP) -- A man missing for nearly a week from a Racine group home has been found dead in a wooded area nearby.

The Journal Times reports that Racine Police were contacted about 4:30 Friday by a person who found the body of Ruben Santos. He had been reported missing from the group home where he lived last Sunday.

The 57-year-old Santos suffered from a severe brain injury. He was found wearing the clothes he was last seen in: a T-shirt and sweatpants, with no shoes or jacket.

Santos' daughter says she searched for him right in the area where he was found. She says he was known to wander off before, and to hide from searchers in wooded areas.

Police are investigating but say there's no sign of foul play.

U of M to offer gender-neutral student housing

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The University of Minnesota is preparing to offer gender-neutral housing at its Twin Cities campus.

Starting in the fall of 2015, up to several dozen upper-division students will have access to campus apartments regardless of sex or what gender they identify with. Minnesota Public Radio News reports that transgender students have been pushing for the change.

It's different than co-ed housing, which lets male and female students live in residence halls on the same floor. In gender neutral housing, biological males and females who identify with the other sex will be able to share living space. Non-transgender students will also be allowed. All participants would have to opt in to the arrangement.

Gender-neutral housing is already available at several Minnesota public colleges.

Packers WR Cobb activated, questionable for Bears

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Packers receiver Randall Cobb has been activated from injured reserve and has been listed as questionable for Sunday's crucial game against the Chicago Bears.

Cobb was the team's allotted player on injured reserve who was designated for return after getting hurt during a 19-17 win October 13th at Baltimore. The playmaking wideout was added to the injury report Saturday with a knee injury.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) is already returning Sunday and is expected to start against the Bears in the game to decide the NFC North title. Coach Mike McCarthy said he gave Cobb more work in practice Friday to help determine whether he should be activated.

Cobb caught 29 passes for 378 yards and two touchdowns playing the first five games this season for Green Bay (7-7-1).
