HUDSON, Wis. (AP) -- A Minnesota teen is missing after trying to swim across the St. Croix (kroy) River at Hudson.

Authorities say the 18-year-old Lake Elmo, Minn., teen was at Lakefront Park beach with several friends Monday when they decided to swim the 200-yard channel to the Minnesota side.

Hudson Police Chief Marty Jensen says the teen was wearing jeans and made it one third of the way across when he began to struggle. The Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/NJc3hR ) says he tried to swim back and his friends tried to help him, but couldn't reach him in time.

Crews began searching the river about 5 p.m. but didn't find the teen.
