His sister said he did get some CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) training at school, and it really came in handy last Friday afternoon.

The Lafollette High School sophomore was in his bedroom when he heard a loud bang coming from the kitchen. His father, age 45, had been making a sandwich when he went down. The family would later learn he had suffered a heart attack. The 16-year old could quickly see his dad was not breathing. He called 911 and a Public Safety Communications Center dispatcher calmly advised him to begin CPR and chest compressions. He did so for several minutes until a Madison Police officer arrived to take over life-saving measures.

According to the officer, the 16-year son’s “quick action - in a chaotic and potentially fatal situation - served to prolong his father’s life until Madison Fire Rescue paramedics” were on scene.

The father, according to family, should to be released from a hospital next week following medical procedures, and is expected to make a full recovery. He evidently does not remember what happened, but the officer does.

He has placed the son’s name in nomination for a Madison Police Department Citizen Recognition Award for saving a life; not just any life, but the life of his father.
