Thompson Says He Has Best Chance To Beat Baldwin

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Former Gov. Tommy Thompson says he has the best shot to beat Democrat Tammy Baldwin in the U.S. Senate race and that Democrats will "slice and dice" opponent Eric Hovde should he win the GOP primary.

Thompson defended his campaign and touted his credentials for emerging from the four-way Republican primary during a news conference Friday in the Capitol to announce a host of endorsements.

Thompson has led in the polls, but political newcomer Hovde has narrowed the lead in recent weeks. Also running is former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann and state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald.

Thompson slammed Hovde, noting that he's lived most of his adult life in Washington, D.C.

Thompson says he has the experience needed and is a proven winner, having been elected governor four times.
