PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- Eighteen people are facing possible drug charges in Platteville in connection with an investigation into the sale of marijuana and cocaine in the area. Platteville police Chief Doug McKinley says 18 people were arrested yesterday in the city and on the University of Wisconsin-Platteville campus.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Homicide charges have been filed in the death of a passenger killed in a suburban Milwaukee crash while rushing to the hospital to see his mother who had been struck and killed hours earlier. Twenty-one-year-old Xavier Hughes of Milwaukee is charged with four felonies. Twenty-two-year-old Thomas Olson was killed when the SUV Hughes was driving flipped over on the way to the hospital Sunday.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Vernon County Sheriff's Department is teaming up with the Department of Justice's Cold Case Unit to try to solve a murder that happened 28 years ago. Authorities say they are also trying to identify the victim -- a woman who was found dead in rural Vernon County on May 4th, 1984. Retired Chief Deputy Sheriff Jim Hanson continues to work the case for Vernon County.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) -- Hundreds of people have turned out to defend a Rhode Island war memorial topped with a cross that's being challenged by a Wisconsin-based atheist group. Mayor Leo Fontaine said at yesterday's gathering in Woonsocket he has a new resolve to fight to keep the memorial where it is. Supporters defend the 1921 monument as a tribute to four soldiers killed in the World Wars.
