Town Votes to Disband Police Force

Posted: Tuesday, April 17, 2012 --- 8:26p.m.

TOWN OF BROCKWAY, Wis. (AP) -- A town in west-central Wisconsin has voted to disband its police force.

The Town of Brockway Police Department has closed indefinitely. It consisted of two officers and two squad cars.

Town Clerk-Treasurer Jan Dahl says the force outgrew the town's needs. Dahl says the town originally was going to have just an officer to enforce ordinances but it ended up being a full-service department.

Dahl tells Wisconsin Public Radio (http://bit.ly/HWfkUe) the growing police budget was at odds with the town because of increased costs for gas and utilities and cuts in state aid. She says the closing will save the town about $190,000 a year.

The Jackson County sheriff's office continues patrolling the area. Dahl says if the economy improves the town board would consider bringing back its police department.
