The City of Madison Fire Department is reminding you to stay safe this holiday weekend.
Bernadette Galvez with the Fire Department says despite the advice they give year after year, they still run into problems with fires. She says make sure to have your grill at least 10 feet away from your home or building.
When you're using charcoal be careful after you're done cooking your food because it takes a long time for that charcoal to cool off. Sometimes it can take as long as 72 hours.
Galvez also says if it rains don't grill in your garage, they've seen it happen.
She says it's also important to make sure you have a fire extinguisher or hose near by while grilling.
