MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen has chosen a high-ranking Milwaukee police officer to serve as the state Division of Criminal Investigation's second-in-command.

Milwaukee Assistant Police Chief Patrick Mitchell will take over as DCI's deputy administrator on Monday. He'll make $97,000 per year.

Mitchell began his career as a police officer in Milwaukee in 1985. He has served as assistant chief since June of 2011.

He'll replace Dave Matthews at DCI. Matthews was promoted to division administrator in October.
