Walker Aims to Remove Residency Law in State

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker is calling for a removal of state residency laws, saying municipal officials should not tell where their employees should live.

The governor's plan prohibits local government units, including school districts and counties from imposing or enforcing requirements for current or future employees.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Thursday that the plan would affect about 127 cities and villages in the state, including Milwaukee where residency law has been fiercely debated in the past.

A limited version of the residency rule has been in place in Madison and Green Bay, but experts say it's too early to estimate its statewide impact without further details on other municipalities.

    Would the lack of residency laws make it possible for Gogebic Taconite puppets to live in ritzy Madison or Milwaukee suburbs while "working" for municipalities in NW WI?

    That is just ludicrous. I personally think there should be residency requirements for some public employees...would you want your mayor or city manager or fire chief or police chief NOT to live in the community in which they serve? What about the superintendent of the school district? Does this apply to our legislators? Come on...how many more stupid plans can come out of the Governor's office?
