Walker Calls Special Election for Senate Seat

Posted Tuesday, September 18, 2012 --- 1:16 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The primary in a special election to fill a Milwaukee-area state Senate seat vacated by Republican Rich Zipperer will be Nov. 6, the same day as the presidential election.

Gov. Scott Walker on Tuesday announced Nov. 6 as the primary date and Dec. 4 as the general election.

Zipperer resigned the 33rd district seat in August to serve as Walker's deputy chief of staff.

He was elected to the Senate in 2010 after serving two terms in the Assembly.

Republican state Reps. Chris Kapenga of Delafield and Paul Farrow of Pewaukee have both said they intend to seek the seat, which has been in GOP hands for decades.

Nomination papers are due Oct. 9.

Whoever wins the election will serve through the end of 2014.
