MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- While the number of deer killed in Wisconsin during this year's hunt went up nearly 8 percent, Gov. Scott Walker wasn't among those contributing to the increase.

Walker said Friday he went hunting but failed to bag a deer.

Walker says he "didn't even see anything" when he went hunting in Vilas County. There was no snow on the ground, which Walker says complicated the hunt.

Walker's Department of Natural Resources Secretary Cathy Stepp had better luck. She killed a 7-point buck during the hunt's opening weekend.

According to the DNR, hunters registered 243,739 deer through the nine-day season that ended Sunday. That's up 7.7 percent from preliminary numbers last year.
