Walker Says School Aid Could Go to Teacher Bonuses

Posted Friday, January 25, 2013 --- 11:16 a.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker says state aid targeted to high-performing schools could be given to teachers in those districts as bonuses.

Walker discussed the idea Friday at the state education conference attended by teachers, administrators and others from across the state.

Walker drew anger from teachers in 2011 after he effectively took away their ability to collectively bargain and deeply cut aid to schools. Teachers were a driving force behind the drive to recall Walker last year.

But Walker drew applause Friday when he said his next budget would increase funding for public schools. He says even more money will be targeted to schools showing improvement or those already at a high level.

Walker says he also will provide incentive to low-performing schools that have a plan to turn things around.

As a Walker supporter, I can honestly that say this is a half-baked idea. IMHO, Walker is merely trying to buy votes for re-election. First, there is no need to give money to teachers. In fact, for all the money "they" have cost our state, we should be requesting that they reimburse the taxpayers (eg, "sick-outs" and recalling a politician simply b/c you don't like his/her view should not be the basis for a recall; did the teachers care? Nope.) Second, if Walker wants to give money to schools, there are better ways to spend it if scholastic improvement is the real goal where accountability should be huge.

Giving money to the schools who already have good marks and an "incentive" to those that don't? Seems backward to me. Give money to the schools who have low marks, as those are probably a result of NO MONEY in the budget to help teach these children! This guy's an idiot. No wonder he doesn't value education.

Educational Institutions in affluent communities hold higher performance records. Therefore higher aid levels will go to schools that need that funding he least. Schools that serve middle to lower income demographics need more funding to increase staffing to give greater attention to children individually. Incentives for teachers hold little to no effect for the outcome. Until economic inequity is addressed, the education gap will continue. This will seem counter-intuitive to a conservative ideology.
