Waukesha Priest On Leave Over Abuse Accusation

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) -- The Archdiocese of Milwaukee says it has placed a Waukesha priest on leave while it investigates an allegation of sexual abuse.

The archdiocese's move comes two weeks before Father John Schreiter is scheduled to retire. The archdiocese says he has denied the allegations and is cooperating with the investigation. The accusation surfaced as part of the archdiocese's bankruptcy filing. Schreiter is accused of sexually abusing a minor three decades ago. The incident was reported to the Waukesha County district attorney, who declined to prosecute.

Vicar General Bill Kohler told St. John Neumann Parish Sunday that the allegation has not been substantiated. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/OdPkqA ) reports Schreiter was also accused of abuse in 2004. He returned to active ministry after the Diocesan Review Board found the allegation unsubstantiated.
