Wis. Legislature OKs Sanitation Worker Safety Bill

Posted: Tuesday, May 7, 2013 -- 10:59 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Legislature has approved legislation designed to protect sanitation workers from reckless drivers who go around garbage trucks.

The measure would double fines for motorists who drive recklessly around sanitation workers. The Senate approved it on a 32-1 vote Tuesday. The Assembly also approved a companion bill on a voice vote.

Republican Rep. John Jagler introduced the bill after a worker from his district was severely injured in a car crash in January while depositing trash.

The National Solid Wastes Management Association says up to eight collection workers are killed by cars each year.

Nearly all states have laws that require drivers give way or slow down for parked police, fire or emergency vehicles with flashing lights. But only Michigan extends that to garbage trucks.
