UPDATE: Wis. Mistakenly Posted Tax IDs Online

UPDATED Wednesday, July 25, 2012 --- 2:48 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican state Rep. Tyler August of Lake Geneva is blasting the state Revenue Department for inadvertently making public as many as 110,000 Social Security and tax identification numbers of home sellers.

August says in a statement Wednesday that he is extremely frustrated by the error, especially given that it's the third time since 2006 that taxpayers' private information has mistakenly been made public by the department.

August is vice chairman of the Assembly committee that handles consumer protection and personal privacy.

The information was included in a file placed online for three months by the Revenue Department. It was removed Monday after someone notified the department that the personal information was included in an imbedded file.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Department of Revenue says nearly 111,000 tax ID numbers were mistakenly posted online for more than three months.

The department said Tuesday the Social Security numbers or federal employer ID numbers were included in a real estate report.

The report was available from April 5 through July 23. The department says it has contacted appraisers and real estate organizations asking them to destroy the report after being notified that it contained personal, confidential information for some sellers.

A Revenue Department spokeswoman tells the Wisconsin State Journal (http://bit.ly/NUAPH9) it's unclear how many of the tax IDs posted online were Social Security numbers.

The confidential information was imbedded in a file that was erroneously posted online with the 2011 property sales report. That report was downloaded 138 times.

And what kind of reprimands have been handed down to the persons responsible for this happening. I also don't buy it being unclear how many numbers were ss#'s. Look at the report, this is simply a cover to bear no responsibility for the havoc this may wreck on innocent peoples lives. Zero Tolerance
