UPDATE: Ships bring eagerly awaited salt to Wisconsin

UPDATED Wednesday, February 5, 2014 --- 11:06 a.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Two ships carrying 50,000 tons of salt have arrived in Wisconsin, where some communities have started mixing sand with salt to stretch their supplies.

The city of Milwaukee had used 62,000 tons of salt before two storms that hit Saturday and Wednesday. That's already 5,000 tons more than it uses in a typical winter.

Cities nationwide have been running low on salt with snowstorms hitting early and often this winter.

The public works director in the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha, Fred Abadi, says many communities that order salt through the state Department of Transportation have received less than full deliveries as suppliers try to make sure every area has some salt.

The salt shipment that arrived Wednesday at the Port of Milwaukee will be distributed throughout the state

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Milwaukee and surrounding communities have started mixing sand with salt to stretch their supplies.

The city of Milwaukee began using a combination of two-thirds rock salt and one-third sand on side streets on Saturday. Department of Public Works communications manager Sandy Rusch Walton says the city is still using salt on main streets.

The suburb of Waukesha has been mixing sand and salt for a couple of weeks.

Director of Public Works Fred Abadi says Waukesha has gone through about 8,500 tons of salt so far and is becoming stingier as the winter drags on. The city usually uses 8,500 tons for an entire winter.

Still, public works officials say they'll have enough salt to get through the winter.

Another snowstorm is expected to hit southeastern Wisconsin on Tuesday night.
