Wis. DNR to Brief Board on CWD Find

Posted Tuesday, April 24, 2012 --- 12:35 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- State wildlife officials are set to brief the Natural Resources Board on chronic wasting disease in northwestern Wisconsin this week.

The Department of Natural Resources announced earlier this month that a doe found near Shell Lake was fall was infected, indicating the deadly deer brain disease has jumped out of south-central Wisconsin.

DNR officials want to collect at least 300 samples of deer tissue within a 10-mile radius of the doe's location to determine how widespread the disease may be in the area. The agency also plans to prohibit baiting and feeding in all counties within a 10-mile radius of the deer, including Washburn, Barron, Burnett and Polk counties.

DNR staff plan to fill the board in on the details during a meeting Wednesday in Madison.
