Wis. Diver Dies in Lake Superior Shipwreck off UP

WHITEFISH POINT, Mich. (AP) -- State police say a diver has died while exploring a shipwreck in Lake Superior off the Michigan coast.

Michigan State Police divers recovered the body of 52-year-old Derril Yerigan on Tuesday. He lived in New Richmond, Wis.

According to a news release, charter boat captain Brian Anderson of Frost, Minn., reported that one of four recreational divers failed to return Monday after exploring the wreckage of the SS Samuel Mather.

The ship lies is in 174 feet of water, about 16 miles off Whitefish Point in the eastern Upper Peninsula.

The Chippewa County medical examiner's office is conducting an autopsy to determine what killed Yerigan.
