Wisconsin Voters Face Tight Senate, Presidential Races

Posted Tuesday, November 6, 2012 --- 6:55 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin Republicans are hoping a native son on the presidential ticket will help end a 28-year losing streak that dates back to when Ronald Reagan won re-election in a nationwide landslide.

But even though Rep. Paul Ryan is Mitt Romney's running mate, President Barack Obama isn't conceding Wisconsin or its 10 electoral votes. Obama won Wisconsin by 14 points in 2008, but polls show a tight race this year.

Even closer is the race for U.S. Senate between Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin and longtime former Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson. Both are trying to replace retiring Democrat Herb Kohl, and spending on the race has topped $65 million.

Wisconsin voters on Tuesday also will elect eight members of Congress, all 99 members of the Wisconsin Assembly and half the state Senate.
