Wisconsin county cuts number of insured spouses

MANITOWOC, Wis. (AP) -- Manitowoc County has reduced the number of employee spouses that it insures by more than half under new rules for health care coverage.

County supervisors approved rules in their 2014 budget that bars working spouses from receiving coverage if they can get low-cost insurance through their own jobs.

A report released this week by the county's personnel department shows 126 spouses are no longer eligible for coverage under those rules. It says about 100 spouses can stay on the county's insurance.

Personnel Director Sharon Cornils tells HTR Media that most of those spouses do not have access to affordable health care coverage through their employers.

Many private companies stopped insuring spouses who were eligible for insurance through their employers as the new health care law went into effect.
