Wisconsin Changes How Test Scores Are Measured

Posted Tuesday, July 17, 2012 --- 7:05 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- About half as many Wisconsin students achieved what amounts to a passing score under a new, tougher grading system applied to reading and math tests.

The state Department of Public Instruction released the new measurement Tuesday.

Only 35.8 percent of students were rated proficient or advanced in reading in the recently completed school year, instead of 81.9 percent. In math, the percentage dropped from 78 percent to 48.1 percent.

The DPI says the change doesn't reflect a difference in students' abilities but rather higher standards for achieving a "proficient" rating, the minimum skill level considered necessary for success later in college or work.

The department also released details about what information will be included in new school report cards being issued in the fall.

This is just ridiculous! Spend a day in a Wisconsin classroom and you will find the hardest working teachers and some of the brightest children in our nation. It's amazing how people who are not even involved in the education system make choices about changing the 'standards' for 'one-shot deal' testing to make our state look bad. And, isn't it up to the individual districts to develop report cards? Another fine example of government sticking their nose in where it doesn't belong. Let people who know what they are doing take care of teaching and our children. Visit a classroom and see what REALLY happens there.
