Wisconsin Lottery Ticket Sales Increase

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A new audit shows that Wisconsin lottery sales have increased 2 percent over the past five years.

The Legislative Audit Bureau report released Friday shows that ticket sales totaled about $492 million in 2006 and increased to nearly $503 million in 2011. A little more than half of that, $292 million, was awarded in prizes to players.

Proceeds from the lottery have generated nearly $711 million in property tax relief over the past five years.

Lottery ticket sales have been gradually increasing since 2008. Between 2010 and 2011 sales went up 4.5 percent.

The report shows that scratch-off tickets were the most popular, accounting for $299 million in sales last year. The next highest was Powerball at $65 million.

    Lottery TRANSACTIONS have not increased. The DOLLAR amount has increased due to increases in lottery PRICE. Powerball tickets went from $1 to $2. If you DOUBLE the price of a ticket, but the sales have only increased 2%, this means people are actually AVOIDING the lottery. This story is pretty misleading.
