UPDATED Wednesday, July 11, 2012 --- 11:31 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin state Senate will meet on Tuesday to transition from Republican to Democratic control.

The Democrats have a 17-16 majority following the victory of John Lehman in a recall election over Sen. Van Wanggaard which was certified Wednesday morning by state elections officials.

Lehman was to be sworn in on Monday.

The Senate will meet on Tuesday so a new president and president pro tempore can be elected. Those positions are now held by Republicans but will be replaced with Democrats on Tuesday.

Incoming Democratic Majority Leader Mark Miller says in a statement that he is "glad Republicans have agreed to the past precedent ensuring a smooth transition through the transfer of power."

The Senate is not scheduled to be in regular session again until January.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican state Sen. Scott Fitzgerald says he wants the Senate to meet next week to transfer power from Republicans to Democrats.

The Democrats have a 17-16 majority following the victory of John Lehman in a recall election over Sen. Van Wanggaard which was certified Wednesday morning by state elections officials.

Fitzgerald, who had been the Republican majority leader, said in a statement Wednesday that he is asking senators to meet next week so a new Senate president and president pro tempore can be elected.

A spokeswoman for Sen. Mark Miller, who is the Democratic leader, did not immediately return a message to see if Democrats agreed with Fitzgerald's plan.

The Legislature is not scheduled to be in regular session again until January.
