Officials say there are white deer roaming in Wisconsin's Vilas County outside Boulder Junction.
Keith McCaffery is a retired deer biologist from Rhinelander. He says there's been a cluster of them there since the 1950s, perhaps even longer.
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist Linda Winn in Vilas County says she believes there are several different populations of white deer in that area.
But she says she has no specific figures.
And McCaffery says they are "pretty darn scarce."
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel photographer Jeffrey Phelps recently traveled to Vilas County to find and photograph the deer. He says he had 10 sightings over 5 days.
