Friday Morning Bizarre News Headlines

NEW YORK (AP) -- It may be too soon to declare a mini baby boom. However, a number of couples are crediting their pregnancies to having read the torrid "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy. The books recount the fictional love story with a kinky twist between dominant billionaire Christian Grey and Ana Steele. Nearly 150 women have posted messages on, crediting their pregnancies directly to having read the books. There's no word on how many of the babies will be named Christian or Ana.

BEND, Ore. (AP) -- Ranger is one lucky dog. The 2-year-old bloodhound wasn't out of work for long after being pink slipped by the Polk County, Oregon, sheriff's office due to budget cuts. He found a new job with the Bend Police Department. According to KTVZ-TV, Ranger was delivered free of charge. He joins two other dogs with the department. They'll be trained in tracking missing people or fugitives and sniffing out evidence.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- It was a trip that caught a thief. A helpful citizen stuck out his foot Tuesday night when he spotted a police officer in Lexington, Ky., chasing a suspect. Police say it began when Jamory Russell arranged on Craigslist to sell allegedly stolen jewelry to a prospective buyer. When he noticed a police officer standing with the buyer, authorities say Russell took off. Enter an upright citizen, who stuck out a foot and tripped Russell, which allowed the police officer to capture him. Russell pleaded not guilty Wednesday to several charges, including resisting arrest and theft.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- There will always be a debate over whether bowling is considered a real sport. However, don't try to take away what Katie Verbil just accomplished. The former bowler for Wichita State University this week bowled the best three-game score in women's bowling history, finishing with an 879 series in a Battle of the Sexes league competition. Verbil began her run with 33 consecutive strikes, but left one pin standing in the 10th frame. She wound up bowling two perfect, 300 games and finished with a 279. The old record of 878 was set in December 2001. After she set the new record, Verbil said it was probably the most fun she's had in a long time.

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) -- It's a case of the missing wine in New Hampshire. Rather, cases of wine. The New Hampshire attorney general is looking into the theft of hundreds of cases of wine worth about $100,000 from a state liquor outlet in Portsmouth last December. It was delivered without an invoice or paperwork and disappeared days later without a hint of where it may have been taken. An initial investigation by the state liquor commission ended without a finding, however the liquor commissioner later admitted the probe didn't go far enough.

HYATTSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The morning commute into Hyattstown, Md., became a challenging temptation Thursday when a beer truck overturned, leaving suds on the northbound lanes of Interstate 270. Traffic backed up, and hundreds of cans and spilled brew wasn't cleared away for hours after the accident at 4 a.m. Police say a hazardous materials team was brought in to clean up some spilled truck fuel. No word on how much beer was sopped up.
