MEGA MILLIONS-FREE TICKETS
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Imagine winning the biggest lotto jackpot in U.S. history -- and not even having to spend a buck on a ticket. Some Indiana lottery players will be getting their Mega Millions tickets for free. The Hoosier Lottery says it will hand out 540 free tickets today, in honor of the record $540 million Mega Millions jackpot. The tickets will be distributed at select outlets this morning. Another 540 tickets will be handed out at state lottery headquarters in Indianapolis. Mega Millions is played in 42 states. The drawing will be this evening.
WELFARE BENEFIT CARD
BOSTON (AP) -- Welfare cash cards should be banned at strip joints. That's the recommendation from a special commission in Massachusetts. The commission says use of the debit cards should also be barred at nail salons, tattoo parlors and casinos. It's already against state law to use the welfare cash cards to buy alcohol, tobacco or lottery tickets. The commission's proposals now go to state lawmakers.
SEX SHOP HANDCUFFS
ORANGE, Conn. (AP) -- A sex shop customer needed help. So, the cops were called to cut off the cuffs. It seems a patron at an adult entertainment store in Orange, Connecticut, locked himself into a pair handcuffs. Store employees couldn't get them off, so they called the fire department and then police. Assistant Chief Ed Koether tells the Connecticut Post newspaper the cuffs were similar to the type police use. But the officers keys didn't work in the sex shop handcuffs. The cuffs were cut off with bolt cutters.
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Underage drinking wouldn't be allowed. But underage sipping might be. The Illinois Senate is approving an exemption for cooking students. Supporters say culinary students must be able to pair wine or brandy with certain foods. So, the measure would allow them to "sip-and-spit." Even if the students did swallow, backers say they'd be consuming less than an ounce.
NAPA, Calif. (AP) -- Do you want your wine scrambled or fried? Big eggs are now big in wine making. But these eggs aren't the kind that come from a chicken. A growing number of California winemakers are using egg-shaped fermenters. They're made from concrete to allow in a bit of oxygen. The vintners say the resulting flavor is between that produced by stainless steel tanks and wooden barrels. The Domaine Carneros winery in the Napa Valley is getting into the holiday spirit. They've decorated their one-ton egg for Easter.
BIRDS IN PANTS
DEL RIO, Texas (AP) -- Birds in the pants -- means a big hit to the wallet. Authorities say a Texas man trying to smuggle baby parrots into the U.S. has been fined $2,500. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, the little, green birds were found Sunday in the man's pockets and his backpack. He was returning to the U.S. from Mexico. The man's name hasn't been released. Officials say the birds can't be brought across the border because of concerns about disease.
