Madison Police squad car camera captures fireball in sky

Posted Thursday, February 27, 2014 --- 1:52 p.m.

Madison Police say officers spotted a fireball in the sky Wednesday night, and it was caught on a squad car's camera.

One veteran officer spotted the fireball while parked near Westgate Mall's Hy-Vee store around 11:52 p.m.

A colleague confirmed he saw the same thing as he drove his squad car along Old Sauk Rd.

The first officer captured the fireball on his squad car video camera. It looks like an object could have fallen near a TV tower. The officer drove there, but couldn't find anything out of the ordinary.

He also checked with the FAA. There were no reports of large planes in the area.

In the end, the officer thought it was likely a meteor or some space junk.
