NEW YORK (AP) -- Their race was called off, but marathoners were still running in New York yesterday. The world's largest marathon was canceled because of Superstorm Sandy. But hundreds runners were wearing marathon shirts and carrying backpacks full of supplies,to the hard-hit New York City borough of Staten Island. Thousands of others poured into Central Park to put in their 26.2 miles. There was no official support for the unofficial marathon. But the runners refueled at hot dog stands, while dodging bike riders and dog walkers.
TOOELE, Utah (AP) -- It's one way of taking the leap. A Utah couple married at 13,000 feet, then jumped out of an airplane. Allan and Emily Wood's skydiving wedding including a parachuting pastor, two witnesses and a pair of photographers. It was his second parachute jump and her third. So, each did a tandem jump, strapped to veteran skydivers. The bride wore white -- a white t-shirt with the word "bride." The groom had a black one that said "groom." The new Mrs. Wood tells KSL she's glad she married her best friend, in "such a fun way."
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- First hitting on a female cabbie -- than robbing her. Police in South Carolina say a man flirted with a woman driver while he was in the cab and even texted her a photo of himself. The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports he later called for a ride. Police say the man got into the front seat and pulled out a closed pocket knife. According to authorities, the flirting bandit demanded money and took off running.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A Pizza Hut driver is out of a job -- after peeing on a customer's door. Chloe Teply says her cousin bought pizza as a way of thanking her for a place to stay. Teply's cousin paid for the pizza by credit card but didn't tip the driver. Teply says she noticed the urine on her door about 20 minutes later. The Des Moines Register reports security cameras at the apartment complex confirm the pizza delivery guy did the dirty deed. Teply says the deliveryman called her to apologize after a TV station aired the story. The former pizza driver also cleaned the door.
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- A late-blooming monarch butterfly will be flying to San Antonio today -- but not on its own wings. The butterfly will be getting a ride on a Southwest Airlines flight from Albany, New York. The colorful insect was spotted by Maraleen Manos-Jones -- A-K-A the "Butterfly Lady." She says the monarch butterfly was slow to develop and emerged after its swarm mates headed south. Manos-Jones says Southwest quickly agreed to take them both to San Antonio. She was also able to cut through red tape to get a U.S. Department of Agriculture permit, to transport a butterfly across the state lines.
METAIRIE, La. (AP) -- So what breeds are in your mixed breed? Mutt owners in the New Orleans area are going get the chance to find out. The Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter will benefit from "Who's Your Daddy?" for doggies, as part of Pet Fest 2012. The DNA testing will be at a reduced rate of 50 bucks instead of the usual 75 or even more. The shelter will get $10 from each test. Pet Fest is being organized by a doggie day-care center called Central Bark New Orleans. It will be November 18th.
