CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- It's not a bomb -- but what is it? Police in Clarksville, Tennessee, are scratching their heads over a mysterious suitcase found in a trash can. The bomb squad was dispatched and said whatever it is -- it isn't an explosive device. The hard-sided suitcase was lined with aluminum foil and outfitted with wires, a small fan, a light bulb, sand, and electrical tape. Police spokesman Officer Jim Knoll tells a local paper (Leaf-Chronicle) they're still trying figure out what they found.
ROANOKE, Va. (AP) -- Southwest Virginia is a-half world away from Afghanistan. But it's the closest thing for U.S. fighter pilots. The jet jockeys maneuver their F-15s through the valleys and over peaks near Roanoke. Military officials tell the Roanoke Times the terrain is a good substitute for Afghanistan. The roar of the jets is nerve-racking to some. But not to wildlife buff Brian Hirt. He enjoys spotting for the planes like birds of prey. He adds that many of the jet fighters also share the names of raptors.
ART VENDING MACHINE
DENVER (AP) -- Art for sale -- but not just from a gallery. These works of art are dispensed from a vending machine. A former cigarette machine has a new life at an Art-O-Mat in a Denver gallery. For five bucks, the device releases palm-sized artwork. Access Gallery director Damon McLeese says he saw an Art-O-Mat at the Smithsonian in Washington and was amazed. He found his Art-O-Mat at a gallery in Kansas City that was going out of business. He tells the Denver Post it's been a great draw for his gallery.
GROTON, Conn. (AP) -- Imagine farming, but without the watering and weeding. Throw in a waterside view -- and you've got seaweed farming. University of Connecticut researcher Charles Yarish hopes he can help develop seaweed farming in Long Island Sound. Seaweed is used in everything from sushi to cosmetics. Yarish tells the Day of New London he now has a test plot growing about a-half mile offshore from Bridgeport harbor.
HOUMA, La. (AP) -- It's a bargain Maserati. A 2005 Italian sports car has been sold on eBay for just over $30,000. The car was seized from a drug dealer more than two years ago by the Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, Sheriff's Office. At the time the value was pegged at $80,000. The Courier reports an earlier attempt to sell the car fell through because it needed repairs. No word yet how much authorities will net from the Maserati sale, after the repairs.
RENO, Nev. (AP) -- It's an early spring in many parts of the country -- but it finally looks like winter in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The ski areas in the California-Nevada region are reporting their best conditions of the season. A string of storms dumped as much as eight feet of snow on some ski areas over the last week. It has even been snowing in the desert. The California Highway Patrol reports flurries on I-15 that connects Southern California with Nevada.
